How We Met
When I first met Monique Mitchell, it was anything but love at first sight. I caught myself sizing her up. I thought that we may have to fight one day.
It was freshman orientation week at Florida A&M University and I was intimidated.
I later learned that she was not my competition, but my sister. We were in this life together and called to look out for each other. For too long, I had been conditioned to think that other Black women were a threat.
Before I knew it, Mo and I were thick as thieves. I don't know how it happened. I just woke up one day and loved her as I loved myself. The School of Journalism and Graphic Communication has the effect on people. We're locked away in edit bays for days, sometimes weeks, at a time. We pretty much become family.
The closer we grew, the more I realized that we were the same. The same characteristics that made me role my eyes when we first met, were the same traits that people hated about me. By junior year, life got real.
Together we have experienced the loss of classmates and family members.
We endure together.
When she hurts, I hurt.
In her podcast, One Mo Minute, she boldly evolves through my car speakers. She is transparent and intentional with her god-given gifts. Just the sight of her name brings a smile to my face. I love you, sis.
