Queen Sherika Newman

How We Met

With my stomach on E and gas tank on F, I cried myself to sleep. Of course, life looks glamorous on The ‘Book and The ‘Gram; that’s what they’re made for: Marketing. Sometimes we get so distracted by filters and quotes that we can’t see the battles people are really fighting.

My check was six weeks late, but when I woke up the next day, someone had made a deposit.

Dr. Sherika Newman has been my friend since 2012, but I know God began perfecting this bond long before we ever met. Her home has always been my place of refuge.

When we lived in Fort Myers, I often escaped to her house just for a little peace and quiet. Oh, and there was always food at her place.

When I moved to Atlanta, I found comfort in knowing I’d be surrounded by the family God gave me and the family I chose. Sherika is family. She celebrated the queen in me before I could see the queen in myself.

In 2012, I was honored as one of Southwest Florida’s 40 Under 40 by Gulf Shore Business Magazine. Sherika was more excited that I was, and it showed. She hosted a celebration for me at her home inviting my friends and family into her space. She had thought of everything from putting a TV on the cake to swiping a few extra commemorative glasses to give away as parting gifts. For the first time, I didn’t have to worry; I didn’t have to carry the weight of my life alone.

The morning I woke up and saw Sherika’s deposit, I cried. I cried because nobody knew but God what I was going through. I am often a victim of my own pride. I hate asking for help. Sherika said the Lord told her to give so, she gave. Her gift saved me.

While it’s great to have praying friends, it’s even better to have friends who listen when God speaks.

Sometimes I’m not sure that I deserve her friendship, but, just like grace and mercy, God continues to use her in my life.

Sherika, you are too dope for words.
