Queen Melissa Mitchell

How We Met

Melissa Mitchell carefully colors my timeline with her spirit.

Perfectly layered between @frobabies, @balleralert and @notkarltonbanks are deliberate strokes of heart and humor. Melissa is one of God's greatest works of art.

My four years at Florida A&M University were narrated by Melissa. I was first introduced to this dope queen through the stories she shared with her sister, Monique Mitchell. Apparently, queening runs in the family. Mo adores her big sister, and the admiration is contagious. Melissa had already conquered the mountains that we wanted to see. Her memories led the way.

We didn't meet in person until graduation, but she was everything Mo said she was: stunning, vibrant and dope beyond measure. Through social media, I've studied her life. I've watched her transform into an artist.

Trapped in her home due to Atlanta's 2014 snow nightmare, she unwrapped the gift of art. There, she discovered a new talent, a talent worth every penny. She has not put the brush down since she started painting.

She exhales each and every stroke. She paints from her soul.

Behind the canvas, Melissa is a walking art display. Her socks, her shoes and even her headscarf are evidence of a vision only God could give.

For me, one of the highlights of 2016 was booking Melissa for a TV opportunity. I stood back and watched brows lift and jaws drop as she entered every room. She leaves as lingering aroma of joy. She makes me proud.

Melissa, you are too dope for words.
